Saudi Opens Bids for 3GW Battery Storage Projects

Saudi Arabia has opened qualification for six battery storage projects with a combined capacity of 3,000 megawatts, adding to a pipeline of grid infrastructure as the Kingdom expands power capacity. Each project will have a capacity of 500 megawatts and 2,000 megawatt-hours, with submissions due by May 5, the Saudi Power Procurement Company said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency. The projects will be developed under a build-own-operate model through special purpose vehicles responsible for construction and operations under long-term storage agreements.

The projects are designed to balance supply and demand across the grid and support peak electricity loads, particularly as solar capacity expands.

The projects round follows an initial phase launched in November 2024 covering four projects with a combined capacity of 2,000 megawatts and eight gigawatt-hours, which attracted 33 prequalified companies. Awards from that round have yet to be announced.

Saudi Arabia is targeting 48 gigawatt-hours of battery storage capacity by 2030 as part of its push to diversify its energy mix.
